St Albans Centurions Under 13's were in action on Saturday at the Colosseum. The seniors had a mid season break, so the juniors took centre stage as they played a game against Richmond Warriors U13's. An appreciative crowd enjoyed the enthusiasm and talent shown by both sides in a free flowing end to end game of rugby league. One of the Cents tries is shown below.
Photos from the game are now on our photo website. East Rugby League Shield Semi Final North Herts Crusaders 36 -v- 16 St Albans Cents St Albans Centurions were knocked out of the East Rugby League Shield in the semi final stage by a resurgent Crusaders team. There was no repeat of last weeks result when Cents beat the North Herts team in the league. The Cents lost the game in the first quarter when their disorganisation allowed the Crusaders to score four tries and be 22 -0 up after 17 minutes.. After that it was a good evenly balanced game. Team manager Tony Bottomley again stated that the problem was having to play a different squad of players each week as injuries bite deep. This week there were seven first teamers missing and four players new to the squad. Next week there is a mid season break, so hopefully this will help the injured squad members. After last weeks defeat the Cents bounced back with a comfortable win over North Herts Crusaders. The first half was played in heavy rain, and the second half in sunshine. Despite having seven regular first teamers out of action with injuries, the Cents scored six tries to the Crusaders one in the first half, but the visitors fought back in the second half to outscore the Cents by four tries to two. Match report to follow on the 1st team page. Match day photos now on our photo site. A message from U12's coach Gary Tetlow - An offer to all juniors and their parents - On Sunday 26th June, London Broncos play Leigh in what will be a1st v 2nd in the Championship. Both teams are playing great rugby league and trying to get back into Super League. The Broncos are currently unbeaten at home.
On the morning of the 26th, the Centurions U12`s will play Southend Spartans at Toulmin Drive . The intention is to run a 50 seater coach from St Albans to the Broncos game in Ealing (45 mins) and we want this open to all, and to fill it, to make it viable. The cost (and it may come down) is adult £20 including match ticket, and U16s is only £7.50 to travel, as game entry is free. Great value I am sure you will agree. The timings are tbc but in principle it will be 12.15pm depart Toulmin Drive, 12.30pm pick up at St Albans train station, and return to St Albans at 6pm. The best way for the boys (and in fact parents) to pick up rugby league is to watch it first hand. I urge you to get them along. There is a nice social atmosphere at these games and a chance for a little drink together well. We need to fill the bus to make it viable so please try and support this initiative. If you want to take up the offer, please contact me at [email protected] and let me know the numbers. St Albans Centurions suffered a heavy defeat on Saturday when a team lacking a number of first team players came up against a very good and well drilled Bedford Tigers squad. In a game that was dominated by Tigers - they had scored three tries before Cents had completed one set of six tackles - St Albans were always on the back foot. Several Cents players stood up to be counted but it was just not to be. Match report on first team page. Match day pics on photo website.
Message from the chairman - This Saturday we are at home against North Herts Crusaders. Our clubhouse - the New Greens Club - are doing cheap drinks during the England v Russia football game. ( The Wales kick off is at 5pm, England kick-off at 8pm.) If anyone wishes to stay on after the after match food and watch these games, they will be most welcome, along with any friends, family or other halves that may wish to accompany them.
Couple of interesting pieces of news this week - First of all the Cents have been drawn away to North Herts Crusaders in the semi finals of the East RL Shield. This game is to be played on Saturday 18th June at Hitchin. If we win this one, we are through to the finals against the winners of the other semi final - Brentwood Eels and Southend Spartans.
The Cents also get a mention in Gavin Willacy's rugby league column in The Guardian this week. In his 'Clubcall' section, Gavin writes - Clubcall - St Albans Centurions They may have started their Eastern RL campaign with a two-point loss and a two-point win, but the most eye-catching element to St Albans this summer is their purple, lime green and white hooped kit. Sound familiar Bradford fans? Rather than wear their usual blue and yellow – St Albans’ colours – the Centurions are marking their 20th anniversary by donning a version of their original kit, which was donated to founders Gary Tetlow and Ken Edwards in 1996 by Bradford Bulls, having been worn by the Super League giants away from Odsal the previous season. For an amateur club to survive in a small, southern, football-dominated city (which also has three rugby union clubs) for 20 years is some achievement. Thanks for the mention Gavin. |
