Three teams out today with wins for our open age against Hemel Stags Rugby Club and a convincing win for our U16 against London Skolars Rugby League. Our newly formed U14 missing out with a valiant effort against North Herts Crusaders Rugby League in their first ever game!
Cents Woolley Scores A Hat-Trick For GB Teachers
Centurions player Nick Woolley scored a hat-trick in his latest run out for GB Teachers last weekend. The game, played in Wakefield, ended with Woolley taking home the match ball following the 56-6 win over the Prison Service Rugby League Team.
“They were a big physical team - the game was far tougher than the scoreline suggests,” Nick said after the game.
“It was great to contribute to the scoreboard, and scoring a hat-trick, which made up for the disappointment of having to go off early with a head injury in our previous game against the police.” (23.12.14)

'Headcase Barbers' Announced As St Albans Centurions Newest Club Partners For 2015
St Albans Centurions are pleased to announce their first sponsor to be joining the club as a partner for the 2015 season, Headcase Barbers. Since opening their first shop in December 2000, Headcase Barbers have pushed to restore the reputation and image of the traditional men's barbershop to what it once was, the cornerstone of society where families are made to feel comfortable and welcome, and where men of all ages know they'll get a professional and thorough service from people they trust.

The Spread Of Rugby League - 2014
Shamelessly borrowed from the International Rugby League website - 2014 has been a massive year for Rugby League with more countries playing the game than ever before.
Highlighted in blue are the nations that played the code this year, and, for the first time ever a form of Rugby League has been played in every continent around the globe - except Antarctica. (3/12/14)

St Albans Schools Through To Regional Finals Of National Rugby League Competition
St Albans has two schools through to the regional finals of the 'National Rugby League Champions Schools Competition', and a third could be joining them. Last year marked the region’s first involvement in this prestigious competition with Verulam School entering a Y9 side, who went on to the national semi finals, losing out to Great Sankey School from Warrington. For the 2014/15 competition, Verulam entered at all year groups, and Sir John Lawes and Samuel Ryder Academy entered teams at Y7 and Y8.
The first round of the competition is played on a local basis, and then moving on to the County Festivals, before moving to a regional and then national format.
Verulam’s Y10 and Y11 progressed and are now waiting for their opponents in the regional stage to be determined. The Y9 team went out to Hemel Hempstead School in the county final. At Y7, Samuel Ryder Academy and Sir John Lawes progressed to the county finals and went out in the semi-final and final respectively. Sir John Lawes and Verulam School’s Y8 teams have qualified for the county finals on December 4.
Speaking after the Y7 event, St Albans Centurions junior coach Gary Tetlow said: “It is great to see local schools doing so well in what is a new sport to many. The fact that Verulam School are committed to playing all age groups demonstrated how much they brought into the competition last year and how highly they regard it. And, the fact that we included two new schools this year is testament to their forward thinking and ability to see the benefit of playing league to supplement their union efforts and helping the player to build up confidence and skills.”
He added: “Andy Battersby and Ben Pike should be congratulated. With two, possibly three, local schools moving through to the regionals, there is a good chance we will be represented in the national rounds. We are looking to build on this foundation and run a merit type league for local schools so more of them can give league a go.”

Update On Last Committee Meeting
Just a quick, brief, update from the committee meeting held last weekend.
This meeting mainly focused on our Junior and Mini teams. We will be running a senior, development and occasional veterans side in 2015. We will also be running a junior team in the U13's and a Minis team at U11 level. The club are going to try very hard to run an U9's and a U12's team, but we just cannot find anyone willing to take on the job of coach for these two teams. Ewan, Gary and Craig are going to try and get some crossover from our 'Summer & Winter' partners, Tabard RU club as well as approaching other union clubs in the area to extol the virtues of playing RL in summer. It was decided that if we cannot get an U12 team up and running, then any U12's player that wishes, can come along and train with the U13's and be slowly introduced to the playing team as the season goes on.
There was a general discussion on our aspirations and requirements for next season.
Sam has been working very hard with our kit suppliers, Ranging Bull, and was positive and upbeat about the cost and quality of next years playing strip and training gear. He also reported good news on the sponsors front - more to follow.
Talking of training gear, I was sent this photo, (left) that purports to show Cents player 'The Swede' modelling next years training top. I have now been reliably informed that this is a mock up, and our top will be much more 'colourful and stylish' than the one shown. (27.11.14)

Sneak Preview Of Next Years Strip
St Albans Centurions resident haute couture, Sam 'Teezy Weezy' Norris, has been locked away in his luxury Mayfair penthouse conjuring up yet another fantastic playing strip for the first team for next season. Whilst still in negotiations with our suppliers, Raging Bulls subsidiary 'Rent-a-Tent', regarding the final production of the strip, St Albans Centurions committee have authorised the release of a 'sneak preview' of the basic design, pending the release of the full design in the new year. A clearly emotional Norris said that his latest creation brings together black, electric blue and canary yellow in a fusion of cataclysmic colour - in other words, it looks great. I'm sure any comments would be appreciated on our Facebook or Twitter pages. (16.11.14)
Andy Lake Is Centurions New Head Coach
St Albans Centurions chairman Brian Parker has announced that Andy Lake has been appointed the Cents head coach for the 2015 season. Andy has been a stalwart at the club for a number of years, coming to us from Luton Vipers. As he settled down at the club, he also went on to win international honours by playing for the Great Britain Community Lions and the England Lionhearts. Andy was also part of the 'Treble' winning squads of 2007 and 2010 when the Cents won the league, regional and national titles. The chairman said "It's no secret that we wanted Andy as head coach, and because he's 'been there and done that' he is someone that the younger lads in the team will look up to. With his commitment and pedigree we know Andy will bring our squad on to bigger and better things. Andy took up the mantle of assistant coach last season, whilst recovering from surgery and we hoped he would consider our proposal of coaching at this club that we know means a lot to him. We are very pleased that he has accepted our offer." (1.11.14)
Touch Rugby Over The Winter Months
Couple of pieces of news coming in about things happening in the not too distant future, both involving Cents Minis coach Gary Tetlow. Fist of all Gary and Cents player Mike Hollister are looking at starting a weekly 'social touch rugby get together'. The emphasis will be on the social and fun side of things whilst offering club members and non members alike the chance to keep fit. Gary is looking at Herts University facilities and trying to make it as affordable as possible. The challenge is going to be organising this for the right night that suits the majority, however, he has stated this is not just an open age exclusive, it will be open to everyone. As soon as we hear anything definite, details will be on here.
CHAMPION SCHOOLS - The Champions schools national RL competition is starting again in November and Gary has three local schools taking part. Verulam have entered at all age groups, Sir John Laws at years 7 and 8 and Samuel Ryder Academy at year 7. Gary is going into the last two schools to run a familiarisation session with them to make sure they are prepared. The St Albans stage is played w/c 10th November, and the games to find the Herts inter school champions the following week. The winners then go on to represent their county in inter-county, regional and then national games. If anyone wants to lend Gary a hand, can they please contact him via our Contacts page. (27.10.14)

Cents Get Three Runner Ups At Annual Rugby Awards
The Annual London Rugby League Awards took place on Friday 10th October at the Dial Square room, at the Emirates Stadium in London where the excellent efforts of Primary, Junior and Open Age rugby league was recognised. Reflecting the significant annual growth of the game of rugby league in the London area, this event increases in prominence year on year.
First up for recognition from the Centurions was Harry Dean. Harry is an outstanding centre who starred for Cents at u12s and his efforts were recognised when he was selected for representative honours with North London in the Origin Series. The Beaumont schoolboy excelled in the series and his outstanding season was capped with nomination for u12s Man of Steel, Harry taking the runners up award, as Origin Colleague, Owen Young of Southend Spartans took the top award.
Speaking after the event Harry father Chris said, ‘Harry is disappointed but will come back better next year. Owen is a tremendous player and we are pleased he took the award. Harry thoroughly enjoys his rugby league and it compliments his rugby union efforts over the winter. His skill levels and fitness have improved markedly since he started playing league and with more of his school mates and fellow OAs players getting involved in the Centurions there’s some great development opportunities going on. With so many league players at Beaumont, we are hoping that opportunity extends to Champion Schools’.
It was a night of so near and yet so far for the Centurions as Minis Head Coach Gary Tetlow was runner up in both Youth Coach and Volunteer of the Year categories and the Minis Club was also runner up. Speaking after the event, Coach Tetlow said ‘It was great to be nominated for two categories and whilst its disappointing not to take the top prize, I am hugely motivated to do better next year. It has been a great year for Centurions at both junior and minis and we are already looking forward to 2015. We are looking to grow the club and run Under 7, 9, 11, 12 and 13 and we are always looking to recruit new players and coaches. The great things is we are making great inboards to local schools with our annual primary school tag rugby league tournament and several schools including Verulam, Sir John Laws and Samuel Ryder Academy already lined up for the national Champion Schools this academic year.’
St Albans Centurions will be running a free half term rugby league skills and development camp which will be open to school years 7 and 8. A great opportunity for rugby union and non rugby players to develop new skills, For more information contact [email protected] / 07713472091 (16.10.14)

Rugby Union Players Afraid Of Rugby League Players Claims Daily Mash
As a bit of fun, this article unashamedly borrowed from The Daily Mash:-
"Although distantly related, the two versions of ‘leather egg’ are not on speaking terms, largely because of league’s reputation for sudden, brutal violence. Loose head prop Tom Booker said: “I’m six-foot eight, eighteen stone and vastly wealthy, but league players make me feel like a soft, puny weakling. I know they’re smaller, and there’s only 13 of them compared to 15 of us, but they’ve all got this look about them that says they’d bite my eyes out if I tackled them funny. Also I can’t understand their northern voices, which makes me think they’re talking about me, probably discussing whether to punch me in the face. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a time and a place for gratuitous violence, but what kind of monster doesn’t at least try to dodge a tackle? Only a ravening beast runs straight at people on purpose.” Booker suddenly looked round, saying: “They’re not here, are they? They move so damn quickly without line-outs. “ However rugby union and rugby league confirmed that in the right circumstances they would be prepared to get together to beat up football. "

British Army RL Team Ask Cents For 2015 'End Of Season' Game
The British Army Rugby League team have been in touch with the Cents to ask if we would play them, at their base at Chelmsford, on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31st next year, to celebrate the end of the summer RL season. The Army team have played end of season games at The Colosseum for the last two years and they say they have really enjoyed the quality of the rugby, the camaraderie and the atmosphere shown by St Albans and want to return the favour. Cents Have Three Players In U12 Origin Side
There was more good news for the Centurions U12s when 3 of their squad were selected to represent the North (of London) against their counterparts in the South. The concept has built up over a decade in the capital, based on the internationally acclaimed State of Origin in Australian Rugby League, when New South Wales take on Queensland in a three match series.
The three payers, Harry Dean, Thomas Wilton and Matthew Naylor have all played significant roles in the first two matches of the series, in both instances North coming out on top, and in the second, played at Hemel on Saturday, Harry (left) scoring a remarkable 5 tries. The final game will be played on Saturday at Medway when the North hope to complete a 3 - 0 whitewash. (29.9.14)

Full House Sees Awards Presented To Mini & Junior Teams
St Albans Centurions Minis and Juniors marked the end of another outstanding season with their Awards Ceremony held at a packed New Greens clubhouse. The event was made extra special with the guest of honour, Joey Grima, Head Coach of the London Broncos Rugby League side, giving out the awards, to many familiar faces as an army of Centurions had a attended the previous days Super League game between Broncos’ and Bradford Bulls as guests of Joey.
The U9s opened up proceedings with coach Mike Kelly summarising a memorable few months in which the younger boys and girls had competed soundly against tough opposition in both festival and fixture rugby league, praising their tenacity and team ethic. The membership of this age group doubled over the year, as word got around about the club and its ethos. Winners for u9s included Player's Player: Robert Hutchings, Player's Player runner up: Jamie Fletcher, Coaches Award: William Heselton and Most Improved Player: Ahmed Mrabate
Following on, the U11s took centre stage. Head Coach Gary Tetlow reflected on a season that delivered so much in both rugby and development terms. His side, mainly u10s competed fearlessly against older sides and this certainly bodes well for 2015. Winners for u11s included Players Player: Rory Vorster, Players Player Runner Up: Sophie Bates, Coaches Award: Alex Gosling, Most Improved Player: Gaby McGlenn and Aran Gnanendran and Centurions Medals for Outstanding Contribution to the club went to Sophie Bates and Cian Kelly.
Finally the U12s coach Craig Naylor took the floor, outlining a fantastic season for this age group in the inaugural London Merit League, which the team won. The hope is that the squad can continue to build in the off season and look to retain hours at u13s level in 2015. The Coaches Award went to Harry Dean.
The event ended with the coaches undertaking the ice bucket challenge, much to the delight of their playing squads !
Speaking after the event, coach Tetlow said, "It was a great way to round off a wonderful year for all three age groups. After a turbulent two or three years for the juniors we decided to trim down the number of sides and ensure that we ran the sides well rather than over stretch ourselves. The result has been impressive with each team competing keenly in their respective age groups. In the off season we are looking to recruit more players, and also qualify more coaches, and introduce more volunteers to this great game and club. As well as consolidating these age groups we are looking to also run u7s and u13s next year. It meant a lot to all the players to be recognised individually today and for those who took the main awards, well done."

MASTERS RUGBY LEAGUE
If you’re 35 or over then Masters Rugby League is the game for you! Masters is strictly a social version of the game of rugby league and the rules are slightly modified to cater for the older player - the colour of the shorts indicate if you can be tackled or not.
There are no winners, no champions and no cup finals. Masters is about is the spirit of the game. The most important rule is:
“everyone has to buy a drink for their opposite number.”
St Albans Centurions have a masters team, and Cents co-ordinator Ken Edwards says " Our intention is to get some more games in the coming months and years, the idea being to space out games every two or three months through the year. It keeps the body active and allows favourite stories of yesteryear to be aired in the changing rooms as well as creating yet more stories on game day!! We will definitely need more players, as to play Masters like this requires a bigger squad to allow for unavailability and so on – I would urge anyone who may be interested in playing, officiating or just helping out or watching, to get in touch. There is a growing Masters circuit in the South East and games are always played in a great, non-competitive (well almost always!) and convivial way; I can guarantee you’ll meet some like-minded folk and make some new friends!!!
There is a another game coming up on the 18th October down in Medway where the LADS team (London and Down South) will take on the Souths leading club Medway.
If you fancy a run out every couple of months or so, then please email Ken Edwards at [email protected] for further details. (23.9.14)

CENTS END SEASON WITH FRIENDLY GAME AGAINST BRITISH ARMY VETERANS
Cents Xlll 22 -v- 24 Army Vets St Albans Centurions first team ended their 2014 season with an enjoyable friendly game against the British Army Veterans. The Cents team was made up half and half between first team and development players, and the Army team were players aged 35 and over. The game was played over three 20 minute segments and the free flowing game was reflected in the scoring as the teams seemed to take turns to score, first Cents scoring, then the Vets, and so on until in the last ten minutes, with the score at 18 points each, when the Army broke the deadlock with two unconverted tries. The Cents answered with a try with one minute left, dragging the score back to 22 - 26 but had left it too late to equalise as the whistle went. Cents scorers were Kieran O'Shea (2), Paul Shire and Simon Paige. Three conversions by Gareth Waters. Cents director of rugby David Stevens said " This was an enjoyable game to end the season on, the Army veterans might be aged 35 and over, but they are seriously fit and very experienced. They gave us a good game" Stevens added "The 2014 season has not been one of our best. The club started off well, winning two pre season trophies but having a change of coach mid season, and then an horrendous injury problem did not help matters, and playing in the London league, the hardest regional league, meant we had a very hard game every weekend, often against semi pro's from clubs like Hemel Stags and London Skolars. However, the club committee has plans for next season, so we will be back next season, better organised and stronger."
